According to reports The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is making a plan for Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Both are big cricket stars.
They have already stopped playing Test matches and T20 matches. Now, they only play One Day Internationals (ODIs). But there is talk that they may stop playing ODIs too, after the Australia tour in October 2025.
To get ready for this tour, the BCCI might ask them to play for India A first. Three matches between India A and Australia A will be held in Kanpur. The matches will be on September 30, October 3, and October 5.
These matches will happen at the same time as India’s first Test against the West Indies in Ahmedabad. Playing these games will help Rohit and Kohli get match practice before the main series in Australia.
Rohit and Kohli have amazing records in ODIs. Virat Kohli has scored more than 14,000 runs and 51 hundreds. Rohit Sharma has made over 11,000 runs in ODIs and has hit 32 centuries. They have helped India win many matches. But BCCI also wants to prepare young players for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Some people say they may get a farewell match in Sydney on October 25. But BCCI has said nothing is confirmed about that.
The last time Rohit and Kohli played an ODI was in the Champions Trophy final in March 2025 against New Zealand. Rohit scored 76 runs in that match and won Player of the Match. Kohli scored two important hundreds earlier in the tournament one against Australia and one against Pakistan. They have not played any ODI matches since then.
After the Australia series, India will have more matches. India is set to play a three-match home ODI series against South Africa starting November 30, 2025. Before that, an India A team will play South Africa A in three matches on November 13, 16, and 19.
The Vijay Hazare Trophy is scheduled to start on December 24, 2025. If Rohit and Kohli play in it, they can play only two or three matches because of the busy schedule.
Right now, the BCCI is not making a quick decision about their ODI future. What happens in the India A games and the ODIs in Australia will help decide their next step.
