Google Maps Brings Gemini AI to Every Navigation Mode for Smarter, Hands-Free Travel

Google has started rolling out Gemini inside Google Maps, giving the app a much more natural, hands-free way to help you while you travel.

The new Gemini assistant replaces the older Google Assistant in Maps and works across all navigation modes driving, walking, cycling, public transit and even two-wheelers  so you can ask questions or give commands without touching your phone.

With Gemini in Maps you can start navigation, look for places along your route, check for EV chargers, and share your estimated time of arrival (ETA) using simple voice phrases. The assistant understands natural speech instead of requiring specific commands, so you can say things like “find a petrol pump ahead” or “share my ETA with Ria” and it will act. On Android, Gemini can also use your account language and voice settings so responses match your preferences.

Gemini also makes reporting road problems easier and more conversational. Drivers and riders can tell Maps things like “there’s an accident” or “flooding ahead” and Gemini will record the disruption, improving real-time traffic awareness for others. Google is building these conversational reports into Maps so users can warn fellow travellers quickly without fumbling with menus.

Beyond simple directions, Gemini links to other Google features to save time. It can add events to your Calendar, catch you up on news or sports while you drive, and summarize or translate short messages all without taking your hands off the wheel. These deeper assistant capabilities aim to make Maps act more like a helpful passenger that understands context and your connected apps.

Google has rolled this update out in phases, so not every account or device will see Gemini in Maps at the same moment. The change is largely server-side, meaning many users will get Gemini automatically through their Google account rather than by installing an app update. If you don’t see it yet, Google’s support pages say the feature will appear for signed-in users as the rollout continues.

For users in countries like India, Google has highlighted local improvements alongside Gemini, including proactive traffic alerts, better safety notices, and features tuned for common commuter behaviours there. The company is also pushing landmark-based spoken directions and more useful local recommendations, which can be especially helpful in busy city settings.

This update aims to make navigation safer and more useful: by reducing the need to touch the phone, giving context-aware suggestions, and letting people report problems quickly, Gemini in Maps should smooth daily commutes and long trips alike. To start using it, open Maps, enter navigation, say “Hey Google” or tap the microphone, and speak naturally Gemini will listen and respond.
