Kuldeep became the fastest left-arm wrist spinner to take five five-wicket hauls in Test cricket. He reached this milestone in just 15 matches, breaking the record of England’s Johnny Wardle, who needed 28 matches to achieve the same feat.
On Sunday, Kuldeep bowled brilliantly to take 5 wickets for 82 runs, helping India dismiss West Indies for 248 runs at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.
With a first-innings lead of 270 runs, India enforced the follow-on. The pitch offered little spin, but Kuldeep used his control, variations, and clever drift to trouble the West Indies batsmen. He quickly removed Shai Hope, Tevin Imlach, and Justin Graves in the morning session.
West Indies got some resistance from Khary Pierre and Anderson Phillip, who added 46 runs for the ninth wicket. After lunch, Jasprit Bumrah took Pierre’s wicket. The last wicket partnership added 27 runs, with Phillip defending well and Jayden Seales attacking Kuldeep. Seales was eventually dismissed lbw by a perfectly disguised googly from Kuldeep, giving him his fifth wicket.
With this performance, Kuldeep now holds the record for the most five-wicket hauls by a left-arm wrist spinner in Tests, equaling Johnny Wardle but achieving it in almost half the matches.
