This is the first time in Liverpool’s long history that the club has retired a shirt number for all teams including the men’s, women’s, and youth squads.

Diogo Jota joined Liverpool in 2020 after transferring from Wolverhampton Wanderers, and he proudly wore the number 20 shirt for his entire spell at the club. The decision to retire this number was taken after talking with Jota’s wife, Rute, and his family, to make sure the tribute was what they would have wanted.

The club wanted this to be a lasting way to remember him, as a player and as a person who meant so much to the team and supporters.

Liverpool’s CEO of Football, Michael Edwards, explained that this was a very special tribute for a very special man. He said that Jota became part of Liverpool in 2020, played a key role in winning the club’s 20th league title, and wore the number 20 shirt with pride and affection. Edwards said Jota will always be Liverpool’s number 20 and will never be forgotten.

Jota was loved by teammates, coaches, and fans for his skill, hard work, and constant smile on the pitch. He overcame many struggles in his life to become a top player and always showed gratitude for his career. Former Liverpool player Stephen Warnock said retiring Jota’s shirt was an “incredible” gesture and something that people all over the world agreed was the right decision. He described Jota as a player who enjoyed every moment on the pitch and inspired others with his attitude.

Liverpool’s first game since Jota’s passing, a preseason friendly against Preston North End, was played in a very emotional atmosphere, with many remembering and honoring him.

At the same time, Liverpool is making changes to its squad after right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold left to join Real Madrid. Warnock said replacing Trent’s creativity will be important, and the club has brought in players like Frimpong and Kerkez to add new energy and skill to the team.
