The Indian government has said clearly that TikTok is still banned in the country. Some people thought TikTok might come back when its website could be partly opened on computers. But the government said no orders have been given to remove the ban, and those stories are wrong.
In June 2020, India stopped TikTok and 58 other apps from China. This happened after fights between India and China in a place called Galwan Valley. The government said they banned these apps to protect India’s safety and keep the country’s control over its data.
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) said these Chinese apps were collecting user data and sending it to servers outside India. This was very worrying because the data could be used against India’s security. That is why the government took quick action and blocked the apps.
Before the ban, many people in India used TikTok. More than 120 million people used it, making India one of TikTok’s biggest markets. When TikTok was banned, the company said it wanted to work with the Indian government to keep user data safe. But since then, TikTok has not said much.
A government spokesman told the news agency PTI that no notice has been given to allow TikTok back in India. Any news that says TikTok is allowed again is not true.
Other apps from China like WeChat, Weibo, Clash of Kings, and CamScanner were also banned at first and still cannot be used in India. This is part of India’s plan to keep its digital space safe and protect user information.
Right now, in August 2025, TikTok is still not allowed in India. People use other apps instead. The government wants to make sure user data is safe and private, so the ban continues.
This situation shows how countries face difficulties in dealing with apps from outside and protecting their people’s information online. India is taking steps to keep its digital world secure by keeping the ban on TikTok and other apps.
