Maruti Suzuki's Dzire has taken the number one spot as India's top-selling car for 2025. It beat Tata Motors' Punch, which is a small SUV.
This is surprising since SUVs have been very popular lately. But this small sedan shows people still want sedans a lot. Just last year in 2024, Tata Punch ended Maruti's 40-year streak at the top. Now Maruti is back on top in India's big car market. That market sees over four million cars sold each year. And Maruti did it with a sedan, not an SUV.
Maruti does not give out sales for each car model by itself. But reliable reports from the industry say they sold 2.14 lakh Dzire cars in 2025. This number includes the Tour S version made just for taxis. Maruti stopped making its bigger Ciaz sedan last year. So now the Dzire, which is under four meters long, is the only sedan they offer.
The Dzire got a full new design in its fourth generation back in November 2024. So 2025 was the first full year for this fresh look. Buyers loved the changes. Plus, a government tax cut on sedans helped a lot. The GST tax went down from 29 percent to 18 percent in September 2025. This made the Dzire cost less and draw more buyers.
Dzire sales jumped 32.9 percent from 1.61 lakh units in 2024. On average, Maruti sold about 17,800 Dzire cars each month last year. This topped even big SUVs like Hyundai Creta and Tata Nexon. It proves sedans can still fight strongly. Now other small sedans may have to try harder. These include Hyundai Aura, Tata Tigor, and Honda Amaze. Honda sells both its old and new Amaze models.
The Dzire has a Z12E 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol engine. It works on petrol alone or mixed with CNG. On petrol, it gives 60 kilowatts, or 80 brake horsepower, and 112 Newton-meters of torque. On CNG, power drops to 51.3 kilowatts, or 69 bhp, and 102 Newton-meters of torque.
All versions come with a 5-speed manual gearbox. The petrol version also has a 5-speed automated manual transmission option. Fuel efficiency draws many buyers. The petrol manual gets 24.79 kilometers per litre. The petrol AMT does 25.71 kmpl. The CNG model reaches 33.73 kilometers per kg.
Prices fit different budgets. The regular Dzire starts at 6.26 lakh rupees ex-showroom and goes up to 9.31 lakh for the top version. The Tour S taxi model has two basic options at 6.24 lakh and 7.10 lakh rupees ex-showroom.
These sales helped Maruti hit its best-ever yearly total in 2025. December brought record numbers. In the car world, more news keeps coming. Renault and Nissan plan new models soon. Tata Motors prepares a facelift for Punch and an electric Sierra SUV.
