Apple AirTag 2 Tipped to Launch With iPhone 17 on September 9: Features, Price, Privacy Upgrades

The AirTag 2 will likely make its debut on September 9, 2025, when Apple hosts its annual “Awe Dropping” event. The event is also expected to bring the new iPhone 17 series and some other Apple accessories. This will be the first major update to AirTags since the original version came out in 2021.

Apple AirTag 2 device with updated design and new Ultra-Wideband chip, expected to launch on September 9, 2025, alongside iPhone 17 series at Apple’s Awe Dropping event.

The first AirTag became popular because it helped people track their keys, bags, and other items. It worked well but soon got caught in controversy. Many reports showed that these trackers were sometimes misused for stalking, which led to lawsuits and safety concerns.

Apple did try fixing some of these problems with software updates, but after four years, the company is now ready to bring a completely improved product.

Reports say the AirTag 2 will look almost the same as the current round model, but the changes inside will make it much better. The biggest upgrade is believed to be a new Ultra-Wideband chip, similar to the one used in the iPhone 15.

This chip will make the “Precision Finding” feature much stronger. The old AirTag usually works within 10 to 30 metres. With the new chip, the range could become three times bigger, making it faster and easier to find lost items.

Another major change will focus on safety. Apple knows privacy is the biggest worry with trackers, so the AirTag 2 is expected to come with new protections. It is being speculated that the speaker in the new model will be designed to resist tampering.

In past cases, misusers tried disabling the alert sounds by removing the speaker, but the new design could make that very difficult. Apple wants to ensure that the AirTag 2 cannot be easily used for stalking.

When it comes to the price, nothing has been officially shared yet. To give perspective, Apple introduced the first AirTag in India in 2021 at ₹3,190 for a single unit and ₹10,999 for a four-pack. Today, it is sold at ₹3,490 and ₹11,900. The second-generation AirTag is expected to come in a similar price range, but the final details will only be clear on launch day.

The timing of this update is important. AirTags have become very useful in many situations, even for airlines like Air India, which now let passengers use them to track checked-in luggage. At the same time, Apple has been under pressure to improve the product after criticism, news reports, and legal cases. The new AirTag 2 aims to give users the same benefits but with higher safety and stronger privacy.

Apple’s September event, apart from the AirTag 2, will focus on the new iPhone 17 series. Reports suggest that the standard iPhone 17 might come in six different colours. Apple is likely to add new accessories to the event, such as its TechWoven cases. With this, the company is expected to refresh many parts of its ecosystem alongside the iPhone launch.

For Apple, this launch is about more than just releasing a new product. The AirTag 2 will show how the company balances convenience with safety. By improving its range with a better Ultra-Wideband chip and making its design harder to misuse, Apple wants to rebuild trust among customers and answer the privacy concerns linked to the first AirTag.

With only a few weeks left before the September 9 event, people are waiting to see how Apple presents the AirTag 2 and whether it can become a safer and more powerful tracker for everyday use.
