Shubman Gill Criticized for Yashasvi Jaiswal’s Run-Out, Denies Third Test Double Century

Shubman Gill has come under criticism for the run-out of Yashasvi Jaiswal during the second Test match against West Indies at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. The dismissal prevented Jaiswal from scoring his third career double century, as he fell just 25 runs short.

Former India batting coach Sanjay Bangar blamed the incident on Gill, saying the Indian captain should have supported Jaiswal better. The run-out happened in the 92nd over when Jaiswal hit a full ball from Jayden Seales through mid-wicket.

He immediately ran for a single, while Gill initially committed but then signaled Jaiswal to stop when he realized the ball was already in the hands of Tagenarine Chanderpaul. By that time, Jaiswal was too far from the crease.

The West Indies fielder threw the ball to wicketkeeper Tevin Imlach, who collected it and dislodged the stumps. Jaiswal tried to reach the crease but was too late, leaving him visibly disappointed. Bangar explained that it was a shared responsibility, but the non-striker, Gill, should have kept his eyes on Jaiswal and guided him properly. He said, “Non-striker ki zyaada galti maanta hu main,” meaning in this case, he felt the non-striker was more at fault.

Earlier, cricket legend Anil Kumble had a different take. Speaking during the post-lunch broadcast, he said the run-out was Jaiswal’s mistake, calling it a “bad call” that cost him a double century. Kumble explained that even if Jaiswal ran, there was little chance of making it to the non-striker’s end because the ball went straight to the fielder at mid-off. He was also surprised that the umpire didn’t refer the decision to the third umpire.
