Mohammed Shami has finally spoken about his non-selection for India’s ODI and T20I squads for the upcoming Australia tour. The experienced fast bowler has been out of international cricket since the 2025 Champions Trophy due to fitness issues, even though he played in the IPL and continues to represent Bengal in domestic matches.

Shami, who wasn’t picked for either white-ball squad for the tour starting on October 19, shared his views on the matter through his YouTube channel.
He said that selection decisions are not in his hands and that it’s up to the selectors, captain, and coach. “There have been many rumours and memes. I’ll just say that getting selected is not in my hands. If they feel I should be in the team, they’ll pick me. If not, that’s their decision. I’m fit, practicing regularly, and ready whenever the opportunity comes,” Shami said calmly.
The pacer also assured fans that his fitness is not an issue. “I played in the Duleep Trophy and bowled around 35 overs. My rhythm felt good, and there were no problems with my body. I’m focusing on staying motivated and improving myself even while being away from international cricket,” he added.
Shami also gave his thoughts on the ongoing captaincy debate after Shubman Gill replaced Rohit Sharma as India’s ODI captain. Many fans have been divided on the issue, but Shami urged everyone to trust the process.
“There’s been a flood of memes about this topic,” he said with a smile. “I think people shouldn’t object. It’s the BCCI’s and selectors’ decision. Shubman has captained India in England and leads Gujarat Titans in the IPL, so he already has leadership experience. Someone had to take over, and the board chose him. We should respect that.”
He further added that captaincy changes are a normal part of the game. “Someone is captain today, someone else will be tomorrow. This is how cricket goes on. We should focus on supporting whoever leads the team.”
