The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently replaced Rohit with Shubman Gill as the new captain for the 50-over format. The decision effectively ends Rohit’s successful run as skipper, during which India reached three ICC finals and lifted two trophies.

Tiwary, who once shared the dressing room with Rohit, called the move disrespectful and urged him to “step away with dignity.”

“If I were Rohit Sharma, I would have thought about retirement after this,” Tiwary said in an interview with CricTracker. “A player like him doesn’t deserve to be treated this way.”

He further added that Rohit’s performance as captain and player had been exceptional, making the decision to remove him surprising. “He didn’t just win one ICC trophy; he won two. He took India to the World Cup final and has five IPL titles to his name. After all that success, it’s unfair to see him humiliated like this,” Tiwary said.

According to him, it would be better for Rohit to retire before being forced out. “Before they push him, he should walk away. That way, he can leave with his pride intact.”

Rohit’s numbers as ODI captain underline his success. He holds a remarkable 75% win record — the highest for any Indian captain who has led in more than ten matches. Under his leadership, India went unbeaten until the 2023 World Cup final and later clinched the Champions Trophy 2025 without losing a game.

Despite speculation about his ODI future and chances of playing in the 2027 World Cup, Rohit remains in India’s current setup. He is expected to return to action later this month for the ODI series against Australia.
