Are Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli Nearing the End of Their ODI Careers? Report Reveals Big Update

A recent report by The Telegraph suggests that India’s cricket icons, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, could soon bid farewell to international cricket. The BCCI has reportedly started focusing on preparing for the 2027 ODI World Cup, which could mean the end of the road for both veterans in the 50-over format.

Even though Rohit and Kohli are part of the squad for the upcoming ODI series against Australia, Shubman Gill has been named the new captain. This move has created mixed reactions among fans and experts. Reports suggest that from now on, the selection of both players will depend only on merit and performance.

The report mentioned that it could be very difficult for both players to secure a place in the team for the 2027 World Cup. The selectors’ decision to remove Rohit from ODI captaincy is seen as a strong signal  perform or be dropped. It’s a clear warning that no player’s place is guaranteed.

As per the plan, India will play three ODIs against Australia, followed by three more against South Africa in November-December and another three against New Zealand in January. The Telegraph added that it will be tough for Rohit and Kohli to continue beyond these matches.

Many believe it will be challenging for them to perform at their best after staying away from international cricket for more than seven months. Both last played for India in March 2025 during the Champions Trophy, where India won the title. They performed well in that tournament but have since played only in the IPL.

According to sources quoted in the report, Rohit, who will turn 40 by the time the 2027 World Cup begins in South Africa, was not even on the selectors’ long-term shortlist. This suggests that the selectors are preparing for a new era in Indian cricket possibly without its two biggest stars.
