The Telegraph reported that the BCCI is unlikely to recall the veteran pacer. Shami, who turned 35 last month, has not had standout performances in domestic cricket recently.
Shami last played for India in March 2025 during the Champions Trophy. Since then, injuries have kept him out, and his domestic performances have not made a strong case for a return.
A BCCI official told The Telegraph that Shami’s chances of returning are getting slimmer. “In the Duleep Trophy game, he was not very impressive, except for one brief spell. He isn’t getting younger, and his pace wasn’t at its best. To continue in the IPL, he needs to perform well in domestic matches,” the official said.
Shami has made himself available for Bengal’s Ranji Trophy campaign. Bengal will start their campaign against Uttarakhand on October 15.
Bengal head coach Laxmi Ratan Shukla said, “I spoke to Shami about six to seven days ago. He wants to play, so we are hopeful about his participation in the Ranji opener.”
However, the final squad is yet to be announced. A Cricket Association of Bengal official said that discussions with Shukla will take place in the next few days before finalizing the team.
