Microsoft has started rolling out a new update for Xbox that makes it easier for gamers to continue playing across different devices. The update brings a new play history sync feature, which means players can see the games they recently played on their console, PC, handheld device, or even through cloud streaming. This makes it simple to continue playing a game, no matter which device they switch to.
Earlier, switching devices was not very smooth. Players had to search for the game in their library or try to remember what they last played. With this new update, Xbox now automatically tracks play history and shows it across all platforms. On Xbox consoles, play history appears as a tile directly on the home screen.
On Windows PCs, the Xbox app has a new play history tab under the “Most Recent” category. This way, it is always clear where to jump back in.
The feature works with all cloud-enabled games. It does not matter if a player bought a game digitally years ago, played it on disc, or streamed it through Xbox Game Pass. If the game supports cloud play, it will now appear in the player’s game history. This includes everything from classic Xbox titles to the newest Xbox Series X|S games.
Microsoft tested this feature for several months with Xbox Insiders. Now, as of the end of August 2025, the rollout has started for all Xbox users around the world. The company says the goal is to save players time and let them spend more of it actually playing games instead of searching.
As described in the official Xbox blog, the update is about giving players their whole playable library and play history right at their fingertips.
It is important to note that this feature is not the same as cloud saves. Cloud saves already allowed people to continue their progress on a different device. The new play history sync is different because it focuses on remembering what game a player was last enjoying, so it shows up front and center. This makes it faster to get back in without having to think about it.
The change is also part of a bigger plan from Microsoft, which is working to make Xbox gaming less about the device and more about the experience. The company wants players to move freely between console, PC, handhelds, and the cloud without losing track of where they left off. Recently, Microsoft also began testing another change for Game Pass users.
Game Pass Core and Game Pass Standard subscribers are now being allowed to stream more games directly through the cloud, a benefit that was previously available only to Game Pass Ultimate members. This means players can try more games instantly without waiting for downloads.
For gamers, this is a big step towards a smoother and more flexible experience. Just like watching a show on Netflix and picking it up again on another device, Xbox players can now start a game on one device and quickly continue on another. With this update, Microsoft is making it easier for players to enjoy their games without interruption, no matter where they are playing.
