Glenn Maxwell is hopeful he can still feature in Australia’s T20I series against India despite undergoing surgery on his fractured right wrist last week.

The injury occurred when Maxwell was struck by a hard-hit shot from Mitchell Owen while bowling in the nets ahead of the T20I series against New Zealand in Mount Maunganui. He was immediately sent home and chose surgery to speed up recovery, aiming for a four-week timeline.
Maxwell missed the first two T20Is in Canberra and Melbourne but is optimistic about participating in the remaining three matches: Hobart on November 2, the Gold Coast on November 6, and Brisbane on November 8.
“The surgery gives me hope of playing some part in the India series,” Maxwell said. “The options were miss the series completely or have surgery. I chose surgery to give myself a chance.”
On Wednesday, Maxwell had his cast removed and started using a molded plastic splint. He has begun basic mobility exercises under a hand therapist to gradually strengthen his wrist.
Pain management will be the key challenge as he returns, especially while batting. Maxwell acknowledged the risk of balls coming back too quickly from powerful hitters like Marcus Stoinis, Tim David, Mitch Owen, and Cam Green, but is confident he will manage it safely.
This wrist injury adds to Maxwell’s unusual history of injuries, including a broken leg at a birthday party and a concussion from a golf cart accident. “It was just unlucky the way it hit my arm,” he said.
Missing the New Zealand series was frustrating, as Maxwell was in great form. In August, he played a crucial 62 not out to help Australia beat South Africa in a tight T20I chase. He also scored 107 off 82 balls in domestic One-Day Cup matches for Victoria in September.
Asked about his long-term plans, including the 2028 Olympics, Maxwell said he was only focused on the upcoming Big Bash League. He aims to help the Melbourne Stars secure their first BBL title, having been equal Player of the Tournament last season.
Maxwell is also excited about the addition of former India spinner R Ashwin, believing his presence will enhance the league and offer wisdom to players across teams.
